CONSORTIUM

A challenging but successful year

2023 has been a challenging but successful year! The opening of the Napoli POP and the first operational year in Bari allowed us to get closer to local operators, contributing to the addition of 31 new ASNs, bringing the total connected ASNs to 239. The average exchanged traffic continues its steady growth, as does the peak, reaching 585 Gbps: that’s a 35% increase compared to the previous year. We always strive to facilitate all our members prioritizing their welfare over profits, and this result encourages us to improve even further, always placing the consortium members at the forefront of everything we do.

NAMEX BARI

Namex Bari, one year later

It feels like yesterday that it all began, but Namex Bari has recently celebrated its first anniversary and is proving to be a sustainable reality that assists access operators in reaching content providers and exchanging traffic with their peers locally like never before.

NAMEX NAPOLI

Namex Napoli first bits

On December 29 the first bits started flowing in Namex Napoli’s peering LAN. Our new Neapolitan Edge IXP is a must for ISPs based in Campania who are eager to easily access content providers and wholesaler operators. A warm welcome to Telemanapoli and Warian, the first two ISPs that joined the new data center!

RIPE 87 in Rome

In our pleasant community, there are events that leave an indelible mark, becoming memories discussed for years to come, and RIPE 87 in Rome was undoubtedly one of those. As the host sponsor, we thoroughly enjoyed bringing this edition to Rome, connecting with both new and familiar faces, collaborators and internet enthusiasts alike! It was a moment of growth and exchange, and no, we’re not just referring to the Pasta BOF we offered, though it was undoubtedly a highlight! All jokes aside, it was a fantastic event. If you couldn’t make it, and you’re curious, you can catch up on all the videos from the five days on the RIPE website.

P.S. The “carbonara” T-shirts, showcasing the RFC recipe, are swiftly becoming collector’s items!

SCHOOL OF ADVANCED NETWORKING

SoAN - Back in class in 2024

In the spirit of embracing fresh challenges for the upcoming year, consider expanding your horizons through increased focus on professional development. Namex consortium members are invited to participate in a series of specialized classes at no cost, fostering the enhancement of technical skills. In collaboration with Reiss Romoli and 1off Srl, this initiative aims to provide valuable educational opportunities.

FUN FACTS

The New Year’s traffic dip

What do people do on New Year’s Eve? Or rather, what don’t they do? We have the answer! As every year, as midnight approaches, traffic experiences a sudden drop until the stroke of midnight, when everyone is busy waiting for the countdown, toasting and firing fireworks, only to pick up again when people start sending New Year’s wishes to everyone in their contacts and video call distant relatives and friends to bridge otherwise insurmountable distances.

A Useful Resource

Our CTO Flavio Luciani, Antonio Prado and Tiziano Tofoni from Reiss Romoli shared their extensive expertise with our members in their book “ BGP: from theory to practice” proudly produced by Namex and available both in Italian and English. Many of our members have found it a helpful tool that contributed to expanding their knowledge and to improving their networks, with benefits across the entire community, because peering is not an individual activity, but a collective one.
